Predictors of functional status in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis

Article Abstract:

The severity of disease at diagnosis can predict long-term function, according to a study of 133 rheumatoid arthritis patients. Disease activity was a better predictor of disability than the length of time the patient had rheumatoid arthritis.

Prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis in urine of male patients with ankylosing spondylitis is not increased

Article Abstract:

Chlamydia trachomatis does not appear to be linked to ankylosing spondylitis, according to a study of 32 men with this spinal disease and 120 healthy men. This bacterium has been linked to a disease called reactive arthritis, which is closely related to ankylosing spondylitis.

Influence of non-inherited maternal HLA-DR antigens on susceptibility to rheumatoid arthritis

Article Abstract:

Maternal human leukocyte antigens (HLA) that are not inherited appear to be associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Researchers analyzed the genes of 97 RA patients and their parents and found that the disease was more often associated with noninherited DR4 antigens from the mother than from the father. Exposure to maternal antigens during pregnancy, in the absence of the inheritance of the DR4 antigen, may increase the risk of RA.
