Prevalence of Gonococcal and Chlamydial Infections in Commercial Sex Workers in a Peruvian Amazon City

Article Abstract:

A significant number of prostitutes in Peru are infected with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), but most believe they are at little risk of contracting STDs. Researchers interviewed 100 prostitutes and tested them for STDs. Chlamydia infection was diagnosed in 22%, and gonorrhea diagnosed in 14%, of prostitutes tested. Adolescent prostitutes had four times the risk of infection with STDs. Nearly half of the prostitutes interviewed believed they were at minimal risk of STD infection, and 11% felt their risk of HIV infection was greater than their risk of other sexual diseases.

Prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in a low-risk population in Hungary

Article Abstract:

The incidence of Chlamydia (C.) trachomatis in Hungary seems to vary from region to region, by marital status, and by age. Three tests for C. trachomatis were used on cervical cell samples taken from 6,161 pregnant women attending one of seven Hungarian health centers. Infection rates ranged from 1.6% to 9.7% with an average of 5.7%. Infection rates were higher among divorced and unmarried women and approached internationally reported rates. Infection rates were highest among unmarried teenaged women.
