Prevalence of overweight and obesity in the United States, 1999-2004

Article Abstract:

Estimates of the prevalence and trends of overweight children and adolescents and obesity in adults in the U.S during 1999-2004 are presented. Results reveal that the prevalence of overweight among children and adolescents and obesity among men increased significantly during the 6-year period from 1999-2004 while among women no overall increase in the prevalence of obesity was observed.

Excess deaths associated with underweight, overweight, and obesity

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to estimate deaths associated with underweight, overweight, and obesity in the United States in the year 2000. The results suggest that underweight and obesity, particularly higher levels of obesity, were associated with increased mortality relative to the normal weight category.

Prevalence of overweight and obesity among US children, adolescents, and adults, 1999-2002

Article Abstract:

The study updates the US prevalence estimates of overweight in children and obesity in adults, using the national data of height and weight measurements. The study concluded the high levels of overweight among children and obesity among adults remain a major public health concern.
