Prevention of antigenically drifted influenza by inactivated and live attenuated vaccines

Article Abstract:

A clinical trial is carried out to determine the efficacy as measured by laboratory confirmation of influenza, of both the inactivated and live attenuated influenza vaccines in the healthy adult population during the influenza season. It is observed that the inactivated and live attenuated influenza vaccines are efficacious in preventing laboratory-confirmed symptomatic illnesses from influenza in healthy adults but the live attenuated vaccines are less efficacious.

Effectiveness of Oseltamivir in Preventing Influenza in Household Contacts: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Article Abstract:

Giving the drug oseltamivir to people who have the flu can reduce the risk that they will transmit the virus to family members, according to a study of 377 people with influenza and 955 of their household contacts. This in turn could lower the transmission rate within an entire community.

Preventing Influenza in Healthy Adults: The Evolving Story

Article Abstract:

Vaccinating healthy adults against influenza may not be cost-effective. This was the conclusion of a study published in 2000. Because the CDC predicts a shortage of influenza vaccine in the winter of 2000, it recommends vaccinating only elderly people and others at high risk.
