Fate hinges on money, politics; CDC injury prevention center caught up in controversy over gun control

Article Abstract:

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Injury Control and Prevention has been targeted for elimination by Congress because of its reports on gun-related injuries. The center does research and develops plans to help prevent injuries, and some of its research has been said to favor gun control. Its $45 million budget has been slated for a 4-year phaseout in the 1995 House budget proposal. Some center advocates believe the National Rifle Assn has put pressure on Congress to cut the program.

Prevention or policing: home drug detection kit spurs controversy

Article Abstract:

The Parents' Alert drug-testing kit, which was created in 1995 by Sunny Cloud, has emerged at the center of a controversy over home drug-testing and its use by parents to monitor their children's behavior. The kit, which costs $40, allows parents to send urine and saliva samples to a certified laboratory for testing and confidential reporting of results. The FDA ruled in late 1995 that the kits were Class III medical devices, a ruling which has drawn substantial criticism and caused the FDA to reevaluate its policy.
