Procedural volume as a marker of quality for CABG surgery

Article Abstract:

Hospitals that do many coronary artery bypass operations do not necessarily have a lower rate of complications or deaths from the operation, according to a study of 267,089 coronary bypass operations done at 439 US hospitals over a two-year period. There was a wide variation in patient outcomes even between hospitals that did the same number of bypass operations. Eliminating up to 100 of the hospitals that do the fewest bypass operations would only prevent 50 out of 7,000 surgery-related deaths.

Improving cardiac surgery quality--volume, outcome, process?

Article Abstract:

It may not be appropriate to rank hospitals by the number of cardiac procedures they perform but rather to determine why some hospitals have low patient mortality rates. Then those best practices can be implemented in all hospitals regardless of their size. A study published in 2004 found that patient outcomes after coronary artery bypass surgery were not necessarily better in hospitals that performed many of these operations.
