Physician reflects on prolonged dying of the elderly

Article Abstract:

There are many geriatric patients who seem to hover close to death for long periods of time. Caregivers can fell helpless, when faced with these patients. It is uncertain whether such patients are incapable of getting well or simply do not want to get well. Doctors, trained to provide comfort, can become disheartened over their inability to improve such patients' quality of life.
