Profiles make perfect practice

Article Abstract:

Clinical practice development should move practitioners to action, and support them, while involving all nursing staff in setting standards. The work of two Clinical Practice Development Nurses (CPDNs) in developing practice profiles is described. Such nurses enable change in the National Health Service's new purchaser and provider set-up. Profiling allows services for patients to be evaluated, caseloads of district nurses and health visitors to be analysed, and health needs to be determined. Profiling defines age and sex of the practice's population, amenities, waiting list and geographical data, as well as morbidity, mortality and epidemiology by area.
