Progress Toward Poliomyelitis Eradication--Afghanistan, 1994-1999

Article Abstract:

Progress in eradicating polio in Afghanistan illustrates the difficulties in conducting vaccination campaigns in war-torn countries. The World Health Assembly wants to eradicate polio globally by the year 2000. In 1996, it was estimated that only 30% of all children in Afghanistan had been vaccinated against polio. Consequently, large mass vaccination campaigns were launched and the World Health Organization arranged cease-fires periodically to ensure that all children could be vaccinated. If this is not successful, polio could spread from these countries to other countries that are free of polio.

Mental health symptoms following war and repression in Eastern Afghanistan

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to determine the rate of exposure to traumatic events, estimate prevalence rates of symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), identify resources used for emotional support and risk factors for mental health symptoms, and assessing the coverage of basic needs in Nangarhar province, Afghanistan. The prevalence of above symptoms rates were high, suggesting that mental health symptoms in this region should be addressed at the population and primary health care level.
