Progress Toward Poliomyelitis Eradication--Democratic Republic of Congo, 1996-1999

Article Abstract:

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has begun to hold National Immunization Days (NIDs) despite the fact that the country has experienced continual armed conflict since October, 1996. It is the last country in the African Region of the World Health Organization (WHO) to implement NIDs to eliminate polio. Unfortunately, nine health zones covering 270,000 children less than 5 years old were not reached during the 1999 NIDs. Another 57 health zones could not complete OPV3 vaccinations. Efforts to eliminate polio in DRC are hampered by the large area of the country, the substantial amount of poverty, a weak health-care infrastructure, poor transportation, and competing demands for resources.

Developing and Expanding Contributions of the Global Laboratory Network for Poliomyelitis Eradication, 1997-1999

Article Abstract:

A global network of laboratories can ensure that polio is eradicated throughout the world. Polio still occurs in many countries, and in 1988, the World Health Assembly resolved to eradicate the disease globally by the year 2000. By the late 1990s, wild poliovirus transmission had been eliminated in the American Region, European Region, and Western Pacific Region. To ensure that specimens from people with polio are properly tested, the World Health Organization created 148 laboratories in all 6 WHO regions, including 126 national or subnational laboratories, 16 regional reference laboratories, and 6 global specialized laboratories.
