Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy in a patient treated with natalizumab

Article Abstract:

The clinical course of a patient with multiple sclerosis in whom progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), an opportunistic viral infection of the central nervous system, developed during treatment with interferon beta-1a and a selective adhesion-molecule blocker, natalizumab, is described. The patient was treated with systematic cytarabine, and it was found that after two months the patient's condition had improved.

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy complicating treatment with natalizumab and interferon beta-1a for multiple sclerosis

Article Abstract:

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), a demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS), is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality and occurs almost exclusively in immunocompromised patients. A trial was conducted to test the safety and efficacy of natalizumab in combination with interferon beta-1a in the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis.

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy after natalizumab therapy for Crohn's disease

Article Abstract:

The relationship between natalizumab therapy and progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), which is an opportunistic, infectious, demyelinating brain disorder associated with impaired T-cell function, is illustrated. Polymavirus replication leading to PML, which is a life threatening disorder, can occur in patients who receive natalizumab.
