Study: HMO liability on par with fee-for-service

Article Abstract:

A study on the number of malpractice suits against health maintenance organizations (HMOs) reveals they experience the same losses as their fee-for-service counterparts. The study, conducted by William Gold and James Posner, examined seven staff- and group-model HMOs with $63 million in malpractice losses over a 10-year period. A complete summary of the number of malpractice claims and the average losses of HMO and fee-for-service physicians is presented.
