Promising new drug results buoy AIDS conference

Article Abstract:

Those attending the 1996 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections were very excited about the results of research by Merck and Co into a promising new drug to control the AIDS virus. Merck's research involved an as-yet-unapproved protease inhibitor, indinavir, administered in conjunction with zidovudine and 3TC. For 24 of the 26 AIDS patients in the trial, symptoms disappeared. However, only long-term testing will determine if indinavir suppresses the virus permanently.
