Puppets can do more than tell a story

Article Abstract:

Puppets can be useful tool in encouraging people with learning disabilities to communicate. The technique can be used with adults so long as the therapist uses the puppets convincingly. The puppets can be used in numerous ways, including to get a patient's attention, to ask questions, demonstrate an activity or give feedback. Glove puppets, finger puppets, mask puppets, shadow puppets and rod-operated puppets are discussed. Patients can help to make the puppet as this helps with team work and physical co-ordination. Puppet therapy should be used in conjunction with other forms of therapy.

Risk-taking for clients with learning disabilities

Article Abstract:

A study into risk-taking among nurses has revealed that those who had studied risk-taking in pre-registration training felt much more confident about taking risks than others. The use of 'normalisation' principles was supported. Risk-taking increases when supported by colleagues decisions, and it diminishes when skill-mix ratios are low. The study into risk-taking, especially among clients with learning disabilities, is discussed further.
