Promising tool, still needs work

Article Abstract:

Medical diagnostic software can help physicians improve their practice by suggesting a variety of possible diseases for symptoms and test results. There are an estimated 5,000 to 10,000 such programs in use, and over half are being used by practicing physicians. The software can suggest diagnosis for patient symptoms, suggest possible medical tests or analyze alternative diagnoses. However, physicians complain that such programs are limited in the scope of diseases and specialities contained in the database and that the programs take too much time to use.

Regrouping onto focused factories

Article Abstract:

Physicians could master vertical integration, managed care, and other market forces in the practice of medicine with a "focused factory" approach to medical care. Low cost and high quality care can be offered by the focused factory, which is defined as a multidisciplinary group with clear, limited objectives. A focused factory can provide all services for one condition, such as cancer, or provides all services for one specific procedure.
