Promotion of women physicians in academic medicine: glass ceiling or sticky floor?

Article Abstract:

Female physicians who teach in medical schools appear to be less likely to achieve associate or full professor status than their male counterparts. In 1991, researchers surveyed 153 female and 263 male physicians who had been appointed to medical school faculty positions eleven years earlier. Of these, 59% of women and 83% of men had achieved the rank of full or associate professor. Physicians of both genders had prepared themselves similarly for their academic careers, although women received fewer academic resources such as lab space and grant money. Physicians' marital status and number of children were not related to the rank they achieved. Women worked approximately 10% fewer hours and authored fewer publications than men. Independent of these factors, female physicians were .37 times less likely than men to be promoted to the rank of associate or full professor.
