Propagation of a human herpesvirus from AIDS-associated Kaposi's sarcoma

Article Abstract:

The ability to reproduce the Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) may open up further study into its role in the development of Kaposi's sarcoma. Kidney cells were infected with Kaposi sarcoma cells isolated from skin lesion samples of five patients with Kaposi's sarcoma and AIDS. The viruses were released, compared genetically with known sequences of KSHV, and reproduced in more kidney cells. KSHV was confirmed only in infected cells. Replication and detection were possible for 20 consecutive infection cycles. The virus caused significant damage to the kidney cells.

Human herpesvirus 8 and Kaposi's sarcoma -- some answers, more questions

Article Abstract:

Scientists have learned much about the human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) since it was discovered in 1994. HHV-8 has been linked to Kaposi's sarcoma, a skin tumor that strikes HIV patients frequently but is also seen in HIV-negative people. A 1999 study found that South Africans with Kaposi's sarcoma were much more likely to test positive for HHV-8 than South Africans with other types of cancer. It is not known why HIV patients are more likely to develop Kaposi's sarcoma.
