Impact of Torture on Refugees Displaced Within the Developing World

Article Abstract:

Refugees who are tortured have a higher rate of depression and anxiety than those who are not. Researchers tested the mental status of 1,052 Bhutanese refugees in Nepal, half of whom had been tortured, using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Revised Third Edition (DSM-III-R) criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the Hopkins Symptom Checklist-25 (HSCL-25) for depression and anxiety. Overall, the tortured refugees had higher scores on 15 of 17 PTSD symptoms and had higher HSCL-25 anxiety and depression scores compared to non-tortured refugees.

Trauma and PTSD symptoms in Rwanda

Article Abstract:

The measures are developed to assess the level of trauma exposure and the prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and their predictors among Rwandans and to determine how trauma exposure and PTSD symptoms are associated with Rwandans attitudes toward justice and reconciliation. It is found that these symptoms are associated with traumatic exposure, proximity to trauma, and some sociodemographic factors.
