Prophylactic use of implanted cardiac defibrillators in patients at high risk for ventricular arrhythmias after coronary-artery bypass graft surgery

Article Abstract:

A cardiac defibrillator that is implanted during coronary artery bypass surgery may not reduce the rate of sudden death from severe arrhythmia. Patients with severe coronary artery disease have a high risk of sudden death from arrhythmia. Of 900 patients scheduled for coronary artery bypass surgery, researchers randomly assigned 446 patients to receive an implanted cardiac defibrillator. During an average follow-up of three years, death rates from any cause or from cardiac disease were similar in both groups.

Underuse of coronary revascularization procedures in patients considered appropriate candidates for revascularization

Article Abstract:

Many patients with coronary artery disease who would benefit from angioplasty or bypass surgery are not receiving it. Of 2,261 patients who would have benefited from angioplasty or bypass surgery, one-third were treated with drugs instead. These patients were more likely to have chest pain, a heart attack, or die than those who received angioplasty or bypass surgery.

Turf battles in coronary revacularization

Article Abstract:

Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) are the two techniques used in the treatment of coronary diseases. Various innovative techniques are used in the minimally invasive cardiac surgery, which has become advantageous to the patients as compared to the traditional CABG.
