Protect worker health through 'people power.' (employee safety training)

Article Abstract:

The concept of employee empowerment in addressing occupational health and safety issues is getting popular. Since workers have first-hand knowledge of the workplace environment, they must know how to devise solutions. However, the accurate identification of health hazards need basic training especially on toxicological chemistry. Four methods of employee safety training include small-group and hands-on classes, worker-teachers, and interactive learning. The support of top company management is also imperative in the success of employee empowerment.

Take safety home with you

Article Abstract:

Westinghouse Savannah River facility safety manager Edward C. Leibfarth stresses that off-the-job injuries result in added costs from workers compensation, insurance and lowered productivity. Leibfarth, who is also the chairman of the National Safety Council's Business and Industry Div.'s off-the-job safety and health advisory committee, believes that few companies implement off-the-job safety programs because of privacy issues. Leibfarth also notes the importance of recognition and involving employees' families in off-the-job safety efforts.
