Protecting the uninsured

Article Abstract:

The proposals advanced by George W. Bush and Senator John Kerry for the benefit of the uninsured, a diverse group including not only unemployed people and their families but also some who work full-time for firms that do not offer insurance and others, are discussed. John Kerry has proposed reforms to the medical-malpractice system that would limit punitive damages and reduce the frequency of claims by requiring the use of medical specialist to determine whether claim is reasonable.

Aiding and abetting: Nursing crisis at home and abroad

Article Abstract:

Several nurses are moving to the US due to a US law passed that include the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations for Defense, the Global War on Terror, and Tsunami Relief in 2005 that mainly funds military operations and reconstruction. Since there is a recognized shortage of nurses in the US, the new law facilitates the immigration of foreign nurses who are already certified, or hold a full and unrestricted license to practice nursing.

Minimal intervention--nurse-midwives in the United States

Article Abstract:

The Maternity Center Association in Harlem opened the first educational program for nurse-midwives, who practice as labor nurses, in order to educate them in both nursing as well as mid-wifery and graduate from a program accredited by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM). Training promotes a noninterventional, individualized approach to normal pregnancy and childbirth, involving a certain amount of education of women.
