Protein requirements of infants and children

Article Abstract:

An evaluation of the protein requirements for infants and children are presented. Despite composition differences, there is no chief difference in efficiency between infant formula and human milk. The 1985 recommendations may prove to be beyond the needs of preschool children but may be suitable for older children and teenagers. For catch-up growth, the protein needs of a stunted child having normal body composition may be determined from the increase in lean tissue related to normal growth.

The requirements of adult man for indispensable amino acids

Article Abstract:

The indispensable amino acid (IAA) requirements of adults are determined. Young's tracer method of finding out human amino acid requirements must give a more accurate scoring pattern in evaluating protein quality. The difference between Young's MIT pattern of IAA requirements and Millward's FAO pattern does not indicate any contradiction. Both researchers appear to question the adequacy of the nitrogen balance method of determining minimum of minimum requirements.

Report of the working group on protein and amino acid requirements

Article Abstract:

An evaluation of research studies on the protein and amino acid requirements of humans is presented. Since protein utilization rates in human milk and infant formulas may vary, infant formula that imitates the composition of amino acids in human milk may not necessarily be best for an infant who is not breastfed. The leucine requirement proposed by the MIT research group supports the recommendation that raises amino acid requirements for adults.
