Providing a different view of schizophrenia

Article Abstract:

A survey of patients with schizophrenia, family carers and professionals found a consensus between the different groups over the services which should be provided in the community to people with schizophrenia, but a belief that these needs were not being met. The most important issues included improved access to professional help; consultation with clients and families; respect for patients; and passing on information. Users focused in particular on practical issues such as quality of housing, security, social networks and counselling.

Different values

Article Abstract:

German and French nurse are allowed little autonomy in delivering patient care, compared to the UK, and training opportunities are also limited. Patients in a German hospital were covered by health-care insurance and the hospital itself was funded by the Catholic Church. There was no evidence of the named nurse concept although there was some use of care plans. Patients at a French orthopaedic hospital were admitted for surgery by GP referral and nurse documentation was based on Henderson's model.

Human values

Article Abstract:

Women who suffer a miscarriage often feel that they are treated as just a routine case by medical staff, who do nothing to meet the patient's emotional needs at a time of great distress. Medical staff often leave the woman alone, rather than offering any words of comfort. It can take a very long time for the woman to recover from this extremely traumatic experience.
