Providing a source of support

Article Abstract:

Nurses working with patients suffering from Parkinson's disease can offer support to both patient and family and provide information on how the disease will progress. The nurse can offer advice to the patient on when to seek specialist care, such as speech, physio- and occupational therapy, as well as encouraging the patient to continue driving and working while it is safe to do so. As the disease progresses and patients lose mobility and have difficulties with speaking and eating, stimulation is very important as it encourages the patient to participate in daily life.

A helpful assessment

Article Abstract:

The Orem's model of nursing is aimed at providing direct help to patients who cannot care for themselves because of illness. The Orem's model was employed to organize the medication and care of George Butler, 47-year-old salesman suffering from Parkinson's disease, and helped to improve his quality of life. Mr Butler spent six days in hospital having his needs, such as occupational therapy and medication, assessed. He was able to organize his own medication and was aware of the significance of drug therapy.
