Public health advocates target children's health

Article Abstract:

The American Public Health Association (APHA) wants Congress and the federal government to maintain many social programs that benefit children and reverse any cutbacks in services. Contrary to legislation that would replace the Medicaid program with state block grants, APHA wants to maintain the existing Medicaid program. Many children are covered by Medicaid and many others are eligible. Fifteen states have been granted waivers to amend their Medicaid programs. APHA also recommends taxes on cigarettes and alcohol, continuing bans on weapons, increased food inspections and better prenatal care programs.

Study examines stress-immune system links in women with breast cancer

Article Abstract:

An ongoing study will attempt to discover whether stress reduction can affect the outcome of women with breast cancer. Half of the women in the study will receive psychosocial counseling that includes muscle relaxation techniques, an exercise program, a low-fat, high-fiber diet and a change in attitudes about cancer. Data from the study already indicate that women with high stress levels have different immune reactions compared to the women with low stress. Other studies have also shown that stress can affect the immune system.
