Vaginal heat shock protein expression in symptom-free women with a history of recurrent vulvovaginitis

Article Abstract:

A study of 24 women with a history of recurring vaginal inflammation reveals that vaginal cells may be under stress and therefore susceptible to constant infection. Heat shock protein, which is produced under stress, was present in vaginal samples from these women but not in vaginal samples from healthy women.

Bacteriocin susceptibility of Gardnerella vaginalis and its relationship to biotype, genotype, and metronidazole susceptibility

Article Abstract:

Biotypes 5, 6, and 7 of Gardnerella vaginalis are most likely to be resistant to bacteriocin, which is an antibiotic produced by Lactobacillus. This could explain how the harmless Lactobacillus in the female vagina is replaced by Gardnerella vaginalis, which then causes a vaginal infection called vaginosis.

Defense factors of vaginal lactobacilli

Article Abstract:

Not all strains of Lactobacillus produce substances that can inhibit the growth of infectious bacteria. Lactobacillus normally grows in the vagina and some strains inhibit the growth of dangerous bacteria by producing lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, or a group of natural antibiotics called bacteriocins.
