Public health programs faring OK so far, but cuts still possible

Article Abstract:

Congress appears to support funding for the Dept of Health and Human Services for the year beginning Oct 1995 in spite of political emphasis on budget cuts. A bill approved by the House Appropriations Committee would increase money for the National Institutes of Health and retain present levels for the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. Also, funds for treatment of HIV and AIDS would rise by $23 million. Advocates hope the Senate will restore funds cut from the budget of the National Inst of Occupational Health & Safety.

Does America really need a Surgeon General?

Article Abstract:

Some legislators are beginning to debate the usefulness of the Office of the Surgeon General. Some leading politicians, such as House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Sen Trent Lott, support the abolition of the Surgeon General's office. Others, however, believe that the Surgeon General provides a powerful service by educating people about public health issues. A brief history of controversial Surgeon Generals and their actions is discussed.
