Published data show FluMist vaccine effective against influenza

Article Abstract:

FluMist, an intranasal influenza virus vaccine, provides significant protection against influenza and influenza-associated otitis media or ear infections. This was shown by a study conducted by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and its manufacturer, Aviron, which showed that children who received the FluMist vaccine had 30% fewer ear infections with fever and a 35% decrease in the use of antibiotics for such infections. Three Phase 3 trials also revealed FluMist as a safe vaccine for asthmatic children, high-risk elderly and healthy working adults.

HEV prevalence data may not be accurate

Article Abstract:

The CDC has stated that hepatitis E virus (HEV) prevalence data in the US and in other nonendemic countries may not be accurate and should not be taken as the sole basis of health policies. The inaccuracy may be traced to the discrepancies in the results of various tests of blood donor sera. In evaluating the epidemiology of HEV infection, different tests for antibody to the infection are used. The tests are also evaluated for sensitivity and specificity.
