Pulse oximetry in adults

Article Abstract:

Pulse oximetry measures the amount of oxygen in a patient's haemoglobin. It is a valuable technique for assessing a patient's respiratory status, but nurses should ensure they do not rely solely on this technique for assessment. Pulse oximetry works by detecting the colour of the haemoglobin through a translucent part of a patient's body. The machine will sound an alarm if the oxyhaemoglobin saturation falls below an appropriate level. Pulse oximetry has a range of applications and advantages, but there are also a number of factors which limit reliance on the technique.
