Quality, access to care affected: fiscal woes imperil Canadian system

Article Abstract:

Representative hospitals from each of the provinces in Canada were surveyed for their opinions on the current state of affairs with the Medicare financial outlook. Hospitals in rich and poor areas are feeling the lack of economic support to carry on basic services. Some hospitals are having to close whole wards and operate surgical units on limited hours. The hospital physicians maintain that they have cut every corner that is possible to provide cost-effective medical care and they are still unable to meet the needs of their communities.

Foreign doctors to fill shortages - only in W. Va.?

Article Abstract:

The Department of Labor (DOL) is organizing a pilot immigration program that would simplify labor certification for foreign workers in states where highly skilled workers are needed. However, in identifying these states, the DOL has chosen only West Virginia as a state with a significant physician shortage. The DOL admits that its data is limited but has promised to include in the new program additional areas that can document a physician shortage.

Canadian schools push for IMG limits in cost-cutting plan

Article Abstract:

Canada is planning to contain healthcare costs by cutting the number of physicians allowed to practice in the country. It plans to impose a 10% admissions cut on first-year residents and to limit the number of International Medical Graduates in Canada. Between 1978 and 1988, the number of Canadian physicians increased twice as quickly as the population, and by 1990 there was one physician for every 452 people.
