Quantification of HIV-1 RNA in plasma: comparable results with the NASBA HIV-1 RNA QT and the AMPLICOR HIV monitor test

Article Abstract:

Two blood tests that detect HIV RNA appear to be equally effective in estimating RNA levels in blood. Measuring the amount of viral RNA in blood samples is a method of measuring the number of virus particles. This can be used to track the progression of the disease and the response to treatments. Researchers tested the NASBA HIV-1 RNA QT and the AMPLICOR HIV monitor tests on 107 blood samples from 25 HIV-infected patients. The tests produced similar results on most samples. The tests can be done on relatively small amounts of blood.

Evaluation of two commercial kits for the detection of genotypic drug resistance on a panel of HIV type 1 subtypes A through J

Article Abstract:

The ViroSeq Genotyping System and the TRUEGENE HIV-1 Genotyping Kit may require alternative amplification/sequencing primers to detect some HIV-1 subtypes. This was the conclusion of researchers who used the kits to analyze 15 viral isolates covering HIV-1 subtypes A through J.

Rising prevalence of HIV-1 non-B subtypes in Belgium: 1983-2001

Article Abstract:

A study documented the HIV-1subtype distribution in two Belgian hospitals and determined predictive demographics for non-B subtypes. It was deduced that overall, subtype B was the most prevalent subtype in this population, followed by subtypes A and C.
