Racial Barriers May Hamper Diagnosis, Care of Patients With Alzheimer Disease

Article Abstract:

Many African-Americans may be incorrectly diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease because of a racial bias in the neuropsychological tests that are used to detect the disease. Even if the diagnosis is correct, cultural insensitivity on the part of doctors may deter patients from seeking medical advice and treatment.

Threatened bans on human cloning research could hamper advances

Article Abstract:

Researchers are concerned that the US Congress could pass laws banning research on human cloning. The birth of a cloned sheep in 1997 raised fears of human cloning and Pres Clinton issued a directive banning the use of federal funds in human cloning research. But the technique used to clone the sheep indicates that a mature nucleus can be turned into an embryonic nucleus, producing an embryo that develops into an adult. This could allow scientists to regenerate certain tissues like nerve cells. It could also be used to treat certain diseases that can be ameliorated by switching on fetal genes.
