Radical prostatectomy versus watchful waiting in early prostate cancer

Article Abstract:

The initial results of a trial comparing radical prostatectomy with watchful waiting in the management of early prostate cancer in 2002, is reported after an additional three years of follow-up. It is concluded that radical prostatectomy reduces disease-specific mortality, overall morality, and the risks of metastasis and local progression.

Waiting time in prostate cancer

Article Abstract:

The length of follow-up necessary to demonstrate a survival benefit in the case of prostrate cancer is discussed. To observe the impact of prostrate specific antigen (PSA) screening on prostrate cancer, a randomized trial for screening with a horizon of 15 to 20 years is required.

Natural history of early, localized prostrate cancer

Article Abstract:

The long-term natural history of untreated, early stage prostatic cancer is examined. It is observed that almost all prostrate cancers diagnosed at an early stage have an indolent course; local tumor progression and aggressive metastatic disease may develop in the long term.
