Rare disease research gets boost

Article Abstract:

National Institutes of Health (NIH) has announced a package of $71 million to launch the first clinical studies of its Rare Diseases Clinical Research Network. Rare diseases are defined as diseases or conditions affecting less than 200,000 individuals and can include rare genetic diseases, and pediatric liver diseases. Although they are rare they can be very complicated and therefore lot of research is needed in this field.

Financial anatomy of biomedical research

Article Abstract:

The financing of biomedical research and the interplay of public and private sources based in the U.S. are explored. Enhancing research productivity and evaluation of benefit are some of the pressing challenges, which requires more effective translation of basic scientific knowledge to clinical application and more specific information about sources and uses of research funds.

Public attitudes and perceptions about health-related research

Article Abstract:

The public attitudes and perceptions about health-related research and health care in the U.S. are described. The national and state opinion survey report data shows that Americans rate research as a high national priority and they strongly support greater investment by private and public funders.
