Ready-wrinkled aliens

Article Abstract:

Nurses providing long-term care for the elderly in nursing homes and elderly care wards are not intentionally cruel, but frequently fail to understand the kind of care that older people need. The management of elderly care nursing frequently becomes a matter of ensuring that organisational goals are met, rather than one of meeting the needs of individuals. Men living in care institutions often resemble hostages simply because female nurses do not appear to realise that they may need help with shaving. There is a need for a system of inspection that examines what patients really need.

Miltidisciplinary approach to patient communication

Article Abstract:

Research in a rehabilitation ward for older people found a need for improved communications between patients, carers, relatives and the medical team. A model was developed based on a patients, families and carers clinic, which enhanced communication between staff and patients, enabled correct information to be issued to patients and family and offered an informal relaxed atmosphere.

A harmonious atmosphere

Article Abstract:

Music can play a useful role in both diversion and therapy for older people. In some cases, music allows the patient to assert his or her personality, and it clearly eliminates psychological, physical and emotional barriers. In older people who are confused, music may be one of the few things which they can still enjoy.
