Rebuilding safety

Article Abstract:

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM)/ Boeing Joint Programs Health and Safety Institute (HSI) is a unique partnership that helped to reduce plant injury rates significantly and also improved communication between labor and management. The positive safety culture at the plant involved setting up health and safety committees, safety classes on oprinciples of occupational safety and healtho for all employees and also taking up preventive health initiatives like cholesterol screens. The results of the partnership were very positive, with dramatic drops in recordables and lost workday cases and enhanced awareness of safety measures that prevent occupational ailments like bad backs.

Article Abstract:

Workers participation is crucial in the creation of a safety culture in an organisation. Workers can aid the safety processes by identifying hazards so that action plans can be devised to reduce those hazards. How to get workers involved in the process is described.
