Refining standards of safety

Article Abstract:

Safety has always been given a very high priority at Elf Oil's Milford Haven Refinery. In many cases, safety procedures at this facility have been considerably in advance of those followed at other refineries. High safety standards have been achieved in a number of ways, including using a greater number of direct employees than is usual in refineries. This has ensured that staff become familiar with procedures. The safety management structure at the refinery is based on the formal Refinery Safety Policy, which was adopted in 1977.

Rig business

Article Abstract:

Research commissioned by the UK Health and Safety Executive and carried out by the University of Aberdeen has found that safety representatives on oil rigs may have to wait some months after their appointment before they are suitably trained. Additionally, there is no system to assess the quality, or regulate the supply, of training. Other problems affecting safety representatives include the lack of formal communication links with workers and a feeling of isolation from representatives on other rigs.

Managing contractors' safety

Article Abstract:

Essential safety precautions must be taken when employing contractors in the chemical industry. The United Kingdom's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has released safety guidelines for contractors entitled 'Managing contractors - a guide for employers'. The guidelines are designed to highlight the dangers of allowing an inexperienced workforce to work with chemicals and form part of the HSE's health and safety programme.
