Repaglinide for type 2 diabetes mellitus

Article Abstract:

The FDA has approved the drug repaglinide for the treatment of type 2, or adult onset, diabetes. Sold under the trade name Prandin, its effects are similar to the sulfonylureas. It can be used alone or with metformin. In fact, metformin and repaglinide appear to be more effective together than either drug used alone. As with most diabetes drugs, repaglinide should only be used when blood sugar cannot be controlled by diet and exercise.

Miglitol for type 2 diabetes mellitus

Article Abstract:

The FDA has approved the drug miglitol for the treatment of type 2, or adult-onset, diabetes. Sold under the trade name Glyset, the drug has a similar action to acarbose (Precose). It inhibits enzymes called alpha-glucosidases, which delays the absorption of glucose in the gastrointestinal tract. It is as effective as acarbose in controlling blood sugar when used with a proper diet or with a sulfonylurea drug.
