Report highlights barriers to research on Firearms and violence

Article Abstract:

Firearm researches are undermined by a lack of data on specific weapons, their users, and persons injured by them. The study addressed this data deficient by supporting the development of National Violent Death Reporting System, which links data on specific cases of firearm injury from medical examiners and coroners, police departments, and crime laboratories.

Taking aim at gun violence: tracing bullets and guns to sideline scofflaw dealers

Article Abstract:

Doctors, public health officials, and law enforcement officers are trying to create a unified information system that can track the bullets retrieved from patients who have been shot. They want to find the illegal suppliers of those guns so they can put them out of business. This may ultimately prevent many firearm injuries and deaths.

Efforts to prevent gun sales to mentally ill may deter patients from seeking help

The article discusses the new legislation bill (HR 2640) that aimed to prevent mass homicides in the U.S. However, experts feel that this bill may have unintended effect of discouraging individuals from seeking mental health services.
