Reported outcomes in major cardiovascular clinical trials funded by for-profit and not-for profit organizations: 2000-2005

Article Abstract:

Recent cardiovascular trials funded by for-profit organizations are more likely to report positive findings than trials funded by not-for-profit organization, as are trials using surrogate rather than clinical end points. Trials jointly funded by not-for-profit and for-profit organizations appear to report positive findings at a rate approximately midway between rates observed in trials supported solely by one or the other of these entities.

Association between phonocardiographic third and fourth heart sounds and objective measures of left ventricular function

Article Abstract:

The diagnostic test characteristics of the third heart sound [S(sub 3)] and the fourth heart sound [S(sub 4)] for prediction of left ventricular dysfunction using a computerized heart sound detection algorithm are determined. One of the conclusions showed that the phonocardiographic S(sub 3) is specific for left ventricular dysfunction and appears to be superior to the moderate specificity of the phonocardiographic S(sub 4).

Efficacy and safety of edifoligide, an E2F transcription factor decoy, for prevention of vein graft failure following coronary artery bypass graft surgery: Prevent IV: A randomized controlled trial

Article Abstract:

The efficacy and safety of pretreating vein grafts is assessed with edifoligide for patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Results reveal that while failure of at least 1 vein graft is quite common within 12 to 18 months after CABG surgery, edifoligide is no ore effective than placebo in preventing these events.
