Rest for the wicked

Article Abstract:

The reputation of nursing home night nurses is being undermined because many fail to fulfill their duty to patients by falling asleep during their shifts. Managers face a difficult task when reprimanding permanent staff for falling asleep although temporary staff are refused employment in the future. Nurses must put the needs of patients before their sleep, taking care to ensure they are fully prepared for their shift and lack of sleep is not an issue.

Songs of praise

Article Abstract:

Concentrating on praise instead of criticism encourages a team approach to nursing. Every individual has a valuable contribution to make and appreciation of good practice has a positive effect. A nurse should not be considered lazy if tasks are performed slowly. She may be giving priority to the individual needs of the patient. Reprimands may sometimes be necessary but most nurses will respond if they are given positively.
