War and peace

Article Abstract:

The end of the conflict in Bosnia has left many new problems and challenges facing those responsible for rebuilding the country's health services. This task is complicated by the uncertain political and economic situation and by the lack of data on health. The war has left many not only with physical injuries but also with mental health problems. However, developing community-based mental health services requires more money, including funds to train staff. Bosnia's primary health care services have been neglected due to the dominance of a medical model within existing hospitals.

Prisoners of pain

Article Abstract:

Torture victims, arriving as refugees in Britain, may find it difficult to get appropriate help in a strange country with an unfamiliar language. One helping agency is the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture. The organisation was founded in 1986 to provide medical, practical and psychotherapeutic help to torture victims. It has helped 10,000 clients. Personal experiences, information about torture methods, and names of some countries where torture is practised are included.

Catch-all solution

Article Abstract:

The Green Lane Medical Centre in Liverpool appointed Marie Barnes to study falls among older people. The study included patients aged over 65, who had already had a fall, and who lived in the community. The aim of the project was to identify the significance of the problem; to try and reduce the falls rate and associated injuries; and to identify a possible treatment programme. The study was commended by the 'Nursing Times'/3M judges on the National Nursing Awards.
