Rethinking nonadherence: historical perspectives on triple-drug therapy for HIV disease

Article Abstract:

Physicians should try to involve their HIV patients in treatment decisions to ensure that the patient complies with the treatment. HIV infection is typically treated with three different drugs, but many patients cannot comply with this treatment. Research shows that it is not just the poor and socially disadvantaged who do not comply with treatment. Non-compliance is a widespread problem. Since non-compliance can lead to drug resistant organisms, new methods are needed to ensure compliance among people with communicable diseases.

Phase I Studies of Hypericin, the Active Compound in St. John's Wort, as an Antiretroviral Agent in HIV-Infected Adults

Article Abstract:

Hypericin has no apparent immunological effect in HIV patients, and causes significant skin sensitivity to sunlight. Hypericin is the probable active ingredient in the herbal remedy St. John's Wort, commonly used for depression. In the laboratory, hypericin has shown some antiviral activity. Researchers treated 30 HIV-infected patients with oral or intravenous hypericin. Severe phototoxicity developed in 48% of patients, and no change in CD4 white blood cell levels or other virologic markers was detected.

Assessing the benefits of antiretroviral therapy

Article Abstract:

A study published in 2000 showed that HIV patients whose T cell counts improve have a relatively good prognosis even if viral activity is not completely suppressed. Nevertheless, the goal of anti-HIV therapy should be to suppress viral activity as much as possible.
