Article Abstract:

There were 376 full members of the UK Infection Control Nurses' Association in 1995, versus over 200 Infection Control Nurses (ICNs) employed in England and Wales in the late 1980s, performing a role which was pioneered in 1959. Of 326 members responding to a survey, 272 were based in hospitals and the remainder were based in the community. The role of ICNs needs to be developed to control tuberculosis, staphylococcus aureus and enterococci, which are resistant to certain treatments, as 10% of patients contract an infection whilst hospitalised.

NT Christmas quiz

Article Abstract:

Multiple choice questions are asked related to nursing and the health care industry. Answers are provided later in the publication. Though some questions are amusing, others are quite serious, and point to nurses' dissatisfaction with various features of their profession.
