Risk of brain cancer

Article Abstract:

The risk of brain cancer, as it relates to drinking water source and chlorination byproducts in Iowa, is discussed. A population-based case-control study of 375 brain cancer patients and 2,434 controls was carried out using a postal questionnaire for information o lifetime residential history, sources of drinking water, beverage intake and other potential risk factors. Glioma rates are increasing, and the observation that odds ratios go up with increasing exposure to chlorinated surface water leads to the conclusion that this topic needs further attention.

GAO warns that safety of drinking water is threatened

Article Abstract:

The General Accounting Office reports that the purity of US drinking water may be endangered because of budget cuts at state and federal levels. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has delayed implementing higher safe water standards, and has reported only a fraction of contamination problems. The Safe Drinking Water Act amendments of 1986 require the EPA to take over for communities that fail to report violations, but lack of funds may make it difficult for EPA to meet these requirements.

Poll shows Americans split over gun safety issues

Article Abstract:

Gun owners and nonowners agree that the ban on assault weapons should be maintained, according to research presented in the Journal of the American Medical Assn's Jun 12, 1996, issue. The groups disagree, however, on the question of whether homes with guns in them are safer. A team headed by Robert J. Blendon, of the Harvard School of Public Health's Dept of Health Policy and Management, compiled and examined survey data gathered between 1959 and 1996.
