Rough justice

Article Abstract:

Nurses with a disability tended to believe it had had a positive effect on their practice, but had often received little support from their employer, according to a Nursing Times survey. On the positive side, nurses with a disability often felt it helped them empathise with patients. However, many also found problems in getting a job or continuing training after becoming disabled. The survey also suggests that as an employer the NHS is not sympathetic to nurses with disabilities: few employers had a defined policy on employing people with disabilities or offered formal support.

Patient handling

Article Abstract:

There are signs of a greater commitment to avoiding back injuries among nurses in the UK, but back injury rates remain unacceptably high. Some NHS trusts are now actively encouraging nurses to use patient lifting equipment, rather than lift patients manually, but are aware that it would be unrealistic to introduce a complete ban on lifting patients. Reducing back injury rates among nurses would lead to considerable cost savings in terms of staff absences and insurance claims.

Back care: preventing injury

Article Abstract:

Back injury is extremely common among nurses, and can lead to permanent pain and the loss of a career. According to some observers, little practical help is given to nurses to ensure that back injuries are prevented. It is vital that the health service undertakes constant evaluation and re-evaluation of lifting and handling practices, with every staff member receiving regular training.
