The mixed message

Article Abstract:

There are a range of drugs available to treat HIV and both patients and doctors should know how they work, their possible side effects and which ones work best together. There is debate about when to begin drug treatment. Some clinicians argue that treatment should start early, while others recommend waiting. Reasons for each option are given. A model is suggested which involves respecting the patient's wishes, the benefits of drug therapy, the psychological and physical harm which the drugs might cause and distributing the drugs fairly amongst patients.

Nutrition and HIV infection

Article Abstract:

Patients with HIV infection have an increased risk of nutritional deficit, that is, an insufficiency of nutrients to meet metabolic needs. The deficit may be caused by the patient's increased metabolic needs, usually due to related infections, or by problems with the intake or absorption of nutrients. Nurses can promote the identification of nutritional problems and encourage patient involvement, which should have the additional benefit of boosting feelings of control in the illness. A chart for assessing the risk of nutritional deficit is included.

Romania: a unique experience

Article Abstract:

The involvement of the Sisters of Charity and HealthAid UK in caring for children with AIDS and HIV at the Colentina Hospital in Bucharest, Romania, has helped improve conditions drastically. Children on the wards are much happier and active and have been equipped with a range of toys and bright furnishings, whereas before they were swaddled constantly, rarely held and kept in a depressing environment. The hospital is now seeking to integrate the children into family homes run by Romanians.
