Safety and efficacy of recombinant gamma interferon in the treatment of systemic sclerosis

Article Abstract:

Recombinant gamma interferon (rIFNgamma) therapy appears to be safe and effective in treating patients with systemic sclerosis. Doctors treated 16 patients with systemic sclerosis with either a high or low dose of rIFNgamma for eight months. Interleukin-2 levels, reactive oxygen species of peripheral neutrophils' levels, and skin thickness decreased after treatment. Side effects associated with treatment included flu symptoms, canker sores, increased heart beat, and throat ulcers. There was measured improvement in disease activity or evidence of side effects within the first few months of treatment.

Lung involvement in primary Sjogren's syndrome is mainly related to the small airway disease

Article Abstract:

The lungs of some patients with Sjogren's syndrome show inflammatory lesions that obstruct the airways. Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune disease associated with dry eyes and other symptoms associated with damage to exocrine glands. Researchers performed physiologic measurements and examined lung biopsy samples from 61 Sjogren's patients and 53 healthy people. Patients with Sjogren's syndrome had reduced lung function, confirmed by biopsy to be inflammatory changes in the small airways. Many had only a dry cough as evidence of the changes in their lungs.
