Article Abstract:

A UK supermarket manager did not realise he was responsible for the health and safety of 19,000 customers who visit the shop each week and his 42 employees. A serious breach of the laws could result in the manager being sent to prison. It is predicted 15% of small UK companies are not insured. A visit by an environmental health officer to a corner shop and a supermarket found several problems areas which they were advised upon. Health and safety for UK shop owners is often not a high priority yet the industry employs 2.43 million people.
