Salpingo-oophorectomy and the risk of ovarian, fallopian tube, and peritoneal cancers in women with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation

Article Abstract:

The incidence of ovarian, fallopian tube and primary peritoneal cancer in women who carry a deleterious mutation in BRCA1 and BRCA2 and the reduction in risk of these cancers associated with a bilateral prophylactic salpingo-oophorectomy are estimated. Results reveal that oophorectomy is associated with reduced risk of ovarian and fallopian tube cancer in high-risk women, although there is a substantial residual risk for peritoneal cancer in BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers following prophylactic salpingo-oophorectomy.

Maternal famine, de novo mutations, and schizophrenia

Article Abstract:

The risk for schizophrenia among offspring associated with maternal starvation during conception and pregnancy may be mediated by an increased rate of de novo mutations, as illustrated by studies of the 1944-45 Dutch famine and the 1959-61 Chinese famine. A possible molecular basis for this risk may be the occurrence of mutations in genes critical for brain development, and folate deficiency, which could occur in famine, may also be responsible by impairing capacity for DNA repair.

Salpingo-oophorectomy and the risk of ovarian, fallopian tube, and peritoneal cancers in women with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation

Article Abstract:

A study on lung cancer risk of women compared with men, accounting for age and history of smoking is presented. Results reveal that women have increased susceptibility to tobacco carcinogens but have lower rate of fatal outcome of lung cancer compared with men.
